Terms
what an index rebalance is
Each index has rules about which companies belong in it — mostly size, liquidity and where the company is listed. Periodically the index provider reviews the members against those rules and swaps the ones that no longer fit. S&P does this quarterly; a change can also happen off-cycle when a member is acquired and stops trading.
what float-weighted means
Members are weighted by the value of the shares actually available to trade, not by every share issued. Stock locked up with founders, governments or strategic holders is excluded, so two companies of the same total size can carry different index weights.
what the effective date is
The date the index actually changes, stated in the announcement — usually before the open on that day. The announcement comes first, and the gap between the two has run from a few sessions to a couple of weeks.
the mechanical-buying fact
Every fund that tracks an index has to hold what the index holds. So an addition forces tracking funds to buy and a deletion forces them to sell, regardless of the business. Two things bound that: the flow is concentrated around the effective date rather than open-ended, and it is announced in advance, so it is not necessarily still ahead of the price. How large the flow is, and what price does afterwards, is not something this page claims.
